WALL-E

Here's the basics of my movie page design for the latest animated film from Disney and Pixar. WALL-E. The film opens June 27th, and that's when my page is slated to run as well. I haven't been this excited about a page I've been working on in a while. Let me know what you think too.

Fairie Festival

The "Carrie Fairy" is back again! Well, actually this is the top of a page I'm designing about how to make your own fairy wings. The page is running this weekend because of the Fairie Festival at Spoutwood Farm in Glen Rock. I'll post the entire page design as soon as I get my wings photographed.

Operation Graphic

This graphic is about a player for the York Revolution our local baseball team. He's the type of guy that seems to be quite the jokester but he's suffered quite a few injuries in the past few seasons. One of our sports editors, Lyzz, had the idea of turning him into a version of the Operation board game. The results were mildly hilarious. Although half-way through I did have to put him on a diet to trim off some of the "love handles".

New Museum and Visitor Center in Gettysburg

This is the first of a series of pages we'll be doing about Gettysburg. The plan is to have four pages that will join together, in addition to this one. The pages will run each weekend in June leading up to the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in July. This page shows highlights from the new visitor center. The floor plan took me quite a while to get it just right. But one exciting thing about this assignment: I got to travel to the center along with the reporter and photographer on this story. It was helpful to be able to see the space so that I could create the graphic a little better. And we also got kind of a "behind the scenes" look at the cyclorama painting. It is still in the process of be restored, and it was amazing to see the painting up close and also to see the crew working on it with huge lifts.

Teaching Kids about Saving

Here's an illustration to go along with an article about a class for parents to learn how to teach their kids about money.

Easter egg girlie girl

For our annual Easter craft page, I came  up with something a little bit different. The headline was "Eggs-press yourself"! The idea was a collaboration between myself and Sue, with the idea being personality stereotypes or high school clique clichés. I really like how each of the little egg outfits turned out. The pattern for the egg outfits can be printed out at www.flipsidepa.com, our website for the "Flipside" section of the York Daily Record. The outfits fit around the cardboard tube from a paper towel or toliet paper roll. And large or extra large eggs fit very nicely on the tube/outfit/egg stand. Happy Easter everyone!

Sporty Easter egg

My attempt at creating an athletic egg....

Preppy Easter egg

Here's my preppy easter egg complete with argyle, polka dots and the "monogramed initials" of our paper the York Daily Record.

Easter Egg punk/goth

My dark side coming out a bit....

Easter egg hippie

Here's one of my quirky creations for our Easter egg craft.

Women's History Month

Here's my flying wonder woman. This illustration ran in Sunday's paper and the one below ran in Monday's paper. This is my first series illustration, and I like how they turned out.

Women's History Month

Here's another illustration used for Women's History. This one goes with a story about younger women with the headline "Wonder women to watch." I wanted to show younger women looking up to those that have made an influence before them.

Womens History Month

Here's my first attempt at creating an "Every woman Wonder woman" for a story about Women's History Month. I wanted a way to show more than just one face in this icon of the female super hero. And in case you didn't know, every woman IS a super hero with all that we get done in a matter of only 24 hours.

Christmas and Commercialism

This was the first illustration I created when I started my job at the newspaper. I hadn't started blogging about my artwork at that point, so I never got to share this illustration on-line. Even though Christmas season is long gone, I thought it was still worth sharing this piece. I remember it being a challenge to come up with a way to show how the Christian meaning of Christmas has been changed by our culture of over-indulgence and commercialism. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It was a thrill to be able to take home the newspaper on Christmas Eve and see my name in print underneath my artwork.

Random art fun

Some fun creations from JacksonPollock.org. If you haven't had a chance to check out this site you're missing out! It's addictive, mess-free art fun!

Logo for Living series

Here's a quick little illustration I made as a logo for a series in the Living section called "What nobody tells you about". The idea behind it is for readers to share from their experiences about certain topics like dieting, dating, breaking up, and whatever else our talented Living staff comes up with. I really liked "coloring outside of the lines".

License plate censorship illustration

This illustration is from about a month ago, but I thought it was interesting enough to share. It ran in the paper in black and white, but I like the color version much better. The article was about censoring what people are allowed to use as their vanity plates.

Black History Month Illustration

Here's the cover for our annual Black History Month tab. I wasn't sure if the details of watercolor  would reproduce well in the newspaper, but I ended up being pleased with the test print. I'm hoping to try out some more watercolor soon.

Abstract art page design

I'm secretly trying to get as much yellow as possible into our newspaper. And I had so much fun with this page, because I got to make a mess! Well, at least in the computer.... I wanted to find a way to make art approachable and give kids a way to create something that makes art where there are no right or wrong answers and lots of scribbling outside of the lines. I hope some of our readers actually use this exercise. While doing some research to put this page together I stumbled across an AWESOME site: JacksonPollock.org   Check it out. When you call up the site you'll have a blank canvas before you and with each click of your mouse the "paint" changes color. Depending on how you move your mouse the "paint" will drip accordingly. Have fun!

Oscar's page design

The paper holds a yearly Oscar's contest where our readers can try and guess who will win, and they can win a gift card to go to the movies. So here's my page design. I seem to be really into silhouettes lately, but I really like how this page came together.
Here's my very first "by-line"! This is an idea I've used for making boxes out of Christmas cards, but really it works for any holiday. I actually used one of the boxes I'd made to hold my sweetie DB's valentine (tickets to see the Blue Man Group at the Giant Center in Hershey!)

Women in business

This graphic was a way to illustrate the idea of women helping other women prompted by a story in Business about a new center for Women Entrepreneurs in York.

Page design for Web traffic

Brady's Super Bowl

Here's an illustration I created for our Super Bowl Sunday page. Brady looks so dreamy as he's anticipating his win. I guess things turned out a little differently then he expected.

27 Dresses

This is an illustration I created for a story about the new movie "27 Dresses." I love doing portraits, so it was really fun to try to capture the likeness of Kathryn Heigl. And of course I had to make her dress yellow!

Welcome to my world

Hi!
I've been looking for a way to share what I've been up to and the art I've been working on. I've never been very good at keeping up with my email. And there are so many people whom I'd like to share my artwork with, I thought a blog might be a good place to start. Take a look at art I've been creating for the York  Newspaper Co. where I work as a graphic artist and illustrator. And hopefully I'll soon be able to post art I've created for myself.
